A FEW OUR PREVIOUS WINNERS & WRITE-UPS PORTFOLIO FROM LAST YEAR’S AINTREE FESTIVAL

I Am Maximus - 8/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 GRAND NATIONAL

This has the makings of an excellent renewal. Last year’s winner, Corach Rambler, has to be respected, but he had a hard race in the Gold Cup last month, and if the ground is anything near soft or worse, he won’t be seen to the best of effect. His price is too skinny, and he can be taken on this year.

I AM MAXIMUS (tipped 8/1) has his own way of negotiating fences, and despite not being the most naturalist of jumpers, his engine cannot be discouraged and he’s never fallen in his career, which says a lot.

This eight-year-old relished an extreme test of stamina when successful in the 2023 Irish Grand National under a persistent ride, and that race has predominantly been a good pointer towards the English equivalent a year later.

The fact that this Grade 1-winning chaser was able to give 12lb and a 14-length beating to Vanillier in the Bobbyjo Chase was impressive, and he meets last year’s Grand National runner-up on 4lb better terms here.

He will be ridden by Paul Townend, and in my opinion, he has all the materials to win this race. Willie Mullins is very bullish about his chances, and he has more to come, so if he puts in a clear round, I can see him going close.

Kateira - 7/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 WILLIAM HILL HURDLE

With Dan Skelton chasing the trainers’ championship crown, this is a good opportunity for him to edge closer to it, with a few strong chances in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle.

KATEIRA (tipped 7/1) is the choice of Harry Skelton and is back at the scene of her excellent second in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at this fixture last year, which is a quality piece of form.

She has specifically been trained for this race, and this three-time winner from last season is surely well-handicapped with a mark of 136, given that she was punching above her weight against horses rated 150+ last year at this meeting.

She looked in need of her comeback run when third at Wetherby and clearly didn’t stay when stepped up to three miles next time out at Kempton. She then caught the eye when staying on the fourth last month at the same venue.

Diva Luna - 7/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 MARES’ BUMPER

We have a strong line-up for the Goffs Nickel Coin Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race and I’m drawn to the profile of the Ben Pauling-trained DIVA LUNA (tipped 7/1).

This mare was pitched straight into a Listed race on her stable debut at Market Rasen and beat the reopposing Listentoyourheart very nicely, in spite of the latter having the benefit of experience under rules.

In what was a slowly-run contest, the way she was able to quicken up off the sedate pace and put the remainder in trouble was impressive. She only won by three parts of a length but was allowed to be eased down in the closing stages.

Clearly a mare with a lot of speed and a turn of foot, this track should play to her strengths, and she has plenty more to come. I think her winning debut form has a strong look to it, and having been saved for this race since, she appeals most.
