A FEW OUR PREVIOUS WINNERS & WRITE-UPS PORTFOLIO AT THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL

Better Days Ahead - 7/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 MARTIN PIPE HANDICAP HURDLE

Waterford Whispers has been well found in the market, and preference is for BETTER DAYS AHEAD (tipped 7/1) for the Gordon Elliott team.

He was down the field in last year’s Champion Bumper, but he’s taken well to hurdles, and after winning over three miles at Fairyhouse, he’s run well in two starts since.

He’ll love the conditions and looks quite well treated off a mark of 140 on his handicap debut. Five places are generally available.

Shakem’uparry - 16/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 PLATE HANDICAP CHASE

SHAKEM’UPARRY (tipped 16/1) has to be a great each-way bet for the race. He ran a blinder to finish third in the race 12 months ago and turned in a really good performance when scoring here last time, and that win will have done his confidence a lot of good having shaped well at Newbury on his penultimate start.

Surely, he has plenty more to give, and his valuable attributes, such as his effective jumping and the way he can travel at speed, should again play to his strengths next month. He is also entered in the Ultima, but he barely stays three miles, and this race would be the best chance of him succeeding at the Cheltenham Festival.

Protektorat - 9/1 WINNER OF THE 2024 RYANAIR CHASE

PROTEKTORAT (tipped 9/1) does appear to be a touch overpriced for the Ryanair Chase, and his chances are increased after his jockey and trainer bagged a double yesterday.

Last season’s Betfair Chase winner has run with credit in the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the last two years, finishing third in 2022 and fifth in 2023, and has run well behind L’Homme Presse and Shishkin the last two times.

This race looks tailor-made for him, and he always runs well at this course. With all the positives taken into consideration, he must be considered a leading contender.

El Fabiolo - 6/1 WINNER OF THE 2023 ARKLE CHASE

I will also nominate stablemate EL FABIOLO (tipped 6/1) as a WIN bet only for the Arkle. I think he is of great value against Jonbon, especially when you take into account that he almost beat the latter at Aintree and would have done so without being hampered and also making a mistake at the last hurdle. To get within a neck of the winner who had a dream passage was a true testament to how much raw ability this horse contains.

Nicky Henderson’s charge has improved over fences since but El Fabiolo was also impressive on his only previous start over fences and is sure to improve from that experience. He lacks the experience of the undulations at Cheltenham’s course but his best days are ahead of him and he could reverse the Aintree form and beat the favourite if he takes to the venue.

The Nice Guy - 12/1 WINNER OF THE 2022 ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES’ HURDLE

From an each-way perspective, in the Albert Bartlett, I think Willie Mullins’ THE NICE GUY (tipped 12/1) is appealing with five places generally available. He’s three-from-three, who won his first two bumpers before making the transition to this sphere a winning one, where looked a relentless stayer last-time-out, beating stablemate Ramillies. That was over 2m3f and the manner in which he hit the line so strongly without being asked for maximum effort suggested that he’d be even more effective going up in trip and he gets that here. The seven-year-old jumps very well, will be suited to the Cheltenham hill and, in my opinion, is great each-way value against the big pair in the betting under Sean O’Keeffe.

Love Envoi - 10/1 WINNER OF THE 2022 MARES NOVICES’ HURDLE

The other one I like is the Harry Fry-trained LOVE ENVOI (tipped 10/1), who overcame a late blunder to maintain her unbeaten record in the Grade 2 Jane Seymour four weeks ago. She has a 5Ib penalty, which isn’t ideal, but she’s hardy, jumps really well, stays well and has developed a great partnership with Johnny Burke. She might not be the classiest mare in the field but it will take a good one to get past her that’s for sure as her toughness and attitude cannot be disputed. I think she’s great each-way value against the market leaders with more to come and four places widely available.

Flooring Porter - 14/1 WINNER OF THE 2021 STAYERS’ HURDLE

The Gavin Cromwell-trained FLOORING PORTER (tipped 14/1) has immovably been on the upgrade throughout the past twelve months and emphatically gained a breakthrough success in Grade 1 company last-time-out from the front to win the Christmas Hurdle.

It remains in question as to whether he will handle the track and be able to dictate the pace but he’s a battle-hardened sort, who has form figures of 11211 over three-miles. He is only six too, so he has age on his side and, with further improvement on the cards, he fits the mould to produce another career-best performance.

Minella Indo - 9/1 WINNER OF THE 2021 CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP

I am also going to give one more chance to his stablemate MINELLA INDO tipped 9/1), who is no forlorn hope to be very competitive here despite the rider of the week, Rachael Blackmore, switching to the former.

Many will remember last year’s eventful RSA where this lad went toe-to-toe with Allaho a long way from home and was eventually collared by Champ’s surge in the dying strides. It was noticeable to see, though, this eight-year-old actually picked up again once the winner went past suggesting he would be even better over slightly further.

The son of Beat Hollow resumed this season with two facile victories before taking a soft tumble in the Savills Chase when sent off 5/2 favourite. He was a shade underwhelming when only fourth in the Irish Gold Cup when last seen but made a crucial mistake when mounting a serious challenge which ended all chances.

The major-factor towards his chances is that he’s always been good at this time of the year, saves his best for this track and won the Albert Bartlett on this card two years ago under similar conditions, so he really comes into the equation today and a career-best performance could be forthcoming with Jack Kennedy booked to ride, who’s confidence will be sky high having already fired in three winners this week.
